How your family can be involved in a first marriage meeting
shofa.social arranges first meetings for marriage at a table in a local cafe, in public. There's no chat in the app. A family member or a friend can come along as a chaperone.
What happens, step by step
- Staff at a partner cafe take every profile photo. Nobody can upload their own. Staff also check a photo ID to confirm everyone is 18 or over.
- Members check in by scanning a code on the counter. Only people in the same cafe can see each other's profiles. Profiles don't include anyone's name.
- A wave is a private request to meet that only the person waved at can see. A meeting is arranged only if they wave back.
- They meet at the cafe's shofa table, straight away or at a booked time in the next 14 days.
How you can be involved
- Every profile says whether the person is happy to bring a chaperone.
- Either person can switch on I'll bring a chaperone for a meeting, up until it starts. The other person will see it.
- Your son or daughter can send you a read-only link by WhatsApp, Messages or a copied link, with where and when they're meeting and the other person's first photo and basics.

What shofa.social doesn't do
shofa.social doesn't give religious rulings or approve anyone. After a meeting the app asks one optional question about how it went. Names and numbers are swapped in person, if at all, often through the wali.
For the words used here, read what is a wali and khalwa and mahram.
Questions families ask
Can I come to the meeting?
Yes, if your son or daughter wants you there. They can switch on I'll bring a chaperone for the meeting. The other person will see it before you arrive.
Do I need an account?
The chaperone's link opens in any phone browser, with no account needed. It's read-only and stops working when the meeting ends or is cancelled.
Can I read their messages?
There are no messages to read, because shofa.social has no chat. Matched people can only send set messages about getting there, such as On my way or Can't find you, I'm by the counter.
Who knows about the meeting at the cafe?
The meeting is at the cafe's named shofa table, in public. The booking shows on the cafe staff's screen.
What if someone behaves badly?
Members can block anyone instantly, and anyone, with or without an account, can report a concern. Cafe staff can ban a person from their cafe. Anyone banned at 2 cafes or reported by 3 different people within 90 days is suspended automatically and reviewed.
