What is a wali?

A wali is a woman's guardian in marriage, usually her father, or another close male relative if he can't act. In most schools of Islamic law the wali's involvement is part of a valid nikah, though the schools differ on the details. Many families involve the wali from a first meeting onwards.

The word

Wali is Arabic for a guardian or protector. In marriage it means the person who represents a woman's interests in agreeing a nikah, the Islamic marriage contract. People also use it more loosely for whichever family member is looking out for her during a rishta, the search for a match.

Who usually acts as wali

Most often it's the father. If he has died or can't act, it's usually another close male relative on the father's side, such as a grandfather, brother or uncle. Where a woman has no such relative, many communities turn to an imam or a Muslim judge. The exact order varies between schools of thought.

What the sources say

A well-known hadith says there is no marriage without a wali. It's recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud 2085 and Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1101. The four Sunni schools read it differently, especially on whether an adult woman who has been married before needs a wali's consent. shofa.social doesn't give rulings. For your situation, ask a local imam or scholar.

How a wali can be part of a first meeting on shofa.social

  • Every profile says whether the person is happy to bring a chaperone, who can be a wali, a family member or a friend.
  • Either person can switch on I'll bring a chaperone for a meeting. The other person will see it beforehand.
  • A read-only link can go to the wali by WhatsApp, Messages or a copied link, showing where and when you're meeting and the other person's first photo and basics. It stops working when the meeting ends. The wali doesn't need an account.

The meeting itself is at the cafe's shofa table, in public. Read the page for families for the full picture.
