These are the questions people ask before they join, with answers. If yours isn't here, ask us through the contact page.

Joining and meeting

Where can I meet single Muslims for marriage?

At a shofa.social partner cafe near you. Check in at the counter to see who else in the cafe is looking to marry. If you both wave, you'll meet at the cafe's shofa table.

What happens at a shofa.social meeting?

You'll meet at the cafe's named shofa table, in public. If you're both in the cafe, one of you can ask to meet now. Otherwise you'll pick up to 3 times at the same cafe in the next 14 days. What you talk about and whether you swap numbers is up to you.

Is shofa.social free?

Joining costs one photoshoot, paid at the cafe's own till. Each cafe sets the price. We suggest cafes charge £5. The shoot includes three cafes, the one that took your photos and two more you check in at. Each cafe after that is £2.50, or £7.99 a month for as many as you like.

Is shofa.social a dating app?

shofa.social is for Muslims aged 18 and over who are looking to marry. Every profile states a marriage timeframe. There's no chat in the app. Members meet at a partner cafe's table, in public. Cafes ban people who aren't serious.

Can my family be involved?

Yes, without an account of their own. Every profile says whether the person is happy to bring a chaperone, who can be a family member or a friend. Either of you can say you're bringing one. You can send your chaperone a read-only link with the cafe, the time and the other person's first photo and basics. It stops working when the meeting ends.

Are the photos real?

Cafe staff take every photo in the cafe with the live camera. Nobody can upload their own. You choose up to 4 and the rest are deleted straight away. Each photo shows the cafe it was taken at and the month.

Can I ask for a female photographer?

Yes, at cafes that offer one. Each cafe's page says whether a female member of staff can take your photos.

Can I message people?

Only with set messages about getting there, such as On my way, Running about 10 minutes late or I'm at the window table. There's no free-text chat and no way to see phone numbers.

How many people can I wave at?

Three a day, reset at midnight UK time. Before you can send a new wave, you answer every wave you've received.

What if someone doesn't wave back?

If someone says no, you're never told. Your wave shows Waiting until they say yes. If they say no or don't answer, it'll fade after 72 hours either way. After a wave fades, you can't wave that person again for 30 days.

How is my age checked?

Staff check a photo ID at your photoshoot to confirm you're 18 or over. The ID isn't photographed or stored.

How do I leave?

Pause your profile or delete it whenever you like. Deleting your account removes your profile and all your photos straight away.

Privacy and your account

Who can see my profile?

Who's there now is shown only to people checked in at the same cafe who are the opposite gender and within each other's preferred age range. Other members see past visits labelled This week or This month, never a day or a time. Visitors who aren't signed in see cafe information only.

Will my name be shown?

Profiles have no names or handles. Your phone number is never shown. Each profile has a short code, such as #K4P2, used for reports.

What do notifications show?

They name the cafe, as in Someone at Qamar Coffee House waved at you, with no photo or profile detail.

Can I take back a wave?

You can take back a wave nobody has answered yet. It disappears from the other person's waves, though it still counts towards your 3 for the day.

Do I need to download an app?

shofa.social runs in your phone's browser at app.shofa.social. You can add it to your home screen. On iPhone, notifications only work once you have.

Can I change my date of birth or gender later?

You'd have to contact shofa.social. The app tells you this before you choose.

What if someone approaches me without a wave?

That breaks the house rules. Tell the staff, block the person and report them with the reason Approached without a wave. The person reported is never told who reported them.

How long does a match last?

A match lasts 7 days. If neither of you books a time in that week, it'll close and you can wave each other again.

Does shofa.social ask how the meeting went?

Yes, with one question afterwards that you can skip. Names and numbers are swapped in person, if at all.
